Stats from the past
For those who like the stats, here's some info to put the trip in perspective.
While Bryan will spend most of his days admiring the scenery from the seat of his bike, I plan to take lots of photos, paint some pictures and keep Bryan fed. Our day-to-day activities will vary beyond cycling but we hope to take a charter to Tuktoyaktuk to complete the adventure before we head home again.
What a great way to celebrate Canada 150!
- Hope, BC to Inuvik is 3707 km. Vancouver to Thunder Bay is about 3000 km.
- Bryan's cross Canada trip in 2009 was 6657 km.
- His trip from Abbotsford, BC to Imperial Beach, California in 2014 was 2047 km of cycling. which was complicated by so much urban area (another 900+ km). That won't be an issue this time!
- 2009 from May 31 to July 9.....37 days of cycling, average of 180 km/day
- 2014 from March 4 to March 23....19 days Short daylight hours affected cycling mileage.
- 2017 likely starting on June 2nd.....estimating 200 km/day would mean 18.5 days. We'll see! We have a full month to explore. Bryan hopes to cycle one full day in the 24 hour sun.
- Support: 2009....riding solo until Quebec City, tenting, some motels then all motels after I arrived! 2014.....SUV and motel, since the campgrounds weren't open yet. 2017.....RV all the way because of the lack of motels/food sources on the road.
- Preparation: The first trip, Bryan trained a lot beforehand. The second one...in the weight room through the winter. This one? Training on the road a few days per week. He was 53 the first trip and is now 61. Will that make a difference? He will still need about 9000 calories/day.
- Each trip features his very reliable Cannondale T1 road bike. This time, he will also take his 20+ year old Schwinn for the challenge of the Dempster Highway.

Every previous trip has been filled with so much to see and do, learning curves and challenges. This trip, Bryan will complete the three ocean dip of his bike tire even if we have to carry the tire to Tuktoyaktuk. Pacific to Atlantic and now to the Arctic Ocean.
