Day 1 Get up and Go!

Image
Thanks to an EDO (Earned Day off), we were able to get an head start on Tuesday, May 30.  We headed out of Outlook at 4 pm arriving in Canmore at midnight. With the RV, we can park almost anywhere, including at the Lutheran church that the LCBI Alpine Trip participants know well. The next morning, we were on our way to Hope at 5:30 with gas in the RV and Tim Hortons in us. Once in Hope, Bryan determined to cycle to Boston Bar, 68.8 km along the route. After so many hours of driving, he was glad to stretch out his legs, biking from 4 to 7:15 pm. Some challenging 6% grades gave him that workout but he arrived at the Canyon Alpine RV Park hungry and none the worse for wear. At the start of this trip, we are thankful for so much already, like…. *A great partnership.  A husband who shares his dreams/goals and isn’t too critical of my driving. A wife willing to stretch her comfort zone and keep me well fed. *Good roads for clear sailing including construction that repai...

Stats from the past

For those who like the stats, here's some info to put the trip in perspective.  Hope, BC to Inuvik is 3707 km.  Vancouver to Thunder Bay is about 3000 km. Bryan's cross Canada trip in 2009 was 6657 km. His trip from Abbotsford, BC to Imperial Beach, California in 2014 was 2047 km of cycling. which was complicated by so much urban area (another 900+ km). That won't be an issue this time! 2009 from May 31 to July 9.....37 days of cycling, average of 180 km/day 2014 from March 4 to March 23....19 days Short daylight hours affected cycling mileage. 2017 likely starting on June 2nd.....estimating 200 km/day would mean 18.5 days. We'll see!  We have a full month to explore. Bryan hopes to cycle one full day in the 24 hour sun. Support: 2009....riding solo until Quebec City, tenting, some motels then all motels after I arrived!                                        ...

Planning the trip

Bryan Akre has always sought and welcomed challenges. He started with small trips, like the Golden Triangle with Phil Guebert but had bigger dreams.  So, in 2009, he cycled across Canada, from Vancouver to Stephenville, Newfoundland.  Then, in 2013, he cycled from Abbotsford, BC all the way down highway 101 in the USA to the end of the line at Imperial Beach, California. Cycling to Inuvik is his latest project, starting on June 1st. He will cycle from Hope, BC, continuing to Prince George, Dawson Creek , Whitehorse, Dawson City then on to the Dempster Highway to finish at Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Crossing the Arctic Circle, and cycling in the 24-hour daylight will be some of the thrills.  Janet will share the adventure with him by driving the motorhome, documenting the trip in a blog along the way, and posting the adventure online as wifi connectivity permits. If you are anywhere along our route, we would love to hear from you. Contact us at bjakre@hot...
